My Grandpa has rather severe back problems (and associated pain), and is looking to get a mower that bounces less on his lawn than the 1996 JD 445 tractor he has now. He (and my Grandma) have 4 acres of wide open lawn in upstate, NY, and need a mower than is near if not totally commercial grade. I was thinking a Ferris IS ZTR would have the smoothest ride, but maybe not? What do you guys think? Which ZTR would be best for him?

I can't imagine anything beating the ride of a Ferris. The quality of cut insn't the best, though.

I'd look into him airing those big tires down and replacing that seat with a better suspension seat that has lumbar support and a tilting back rest.

Too many times, the ride of said machine is declared ROUGH, when all you need to do is air those tires down.

The 445 has 26" rear tires IIRC. You should be fine airing them down to 9-10psi. Same with the fronts.

Ferris or Bad Boy... I'd give the edge to Bad Boy if you have a dealer near you. The Bad Boy's Lightning and bigger machines come standard with full front and rear suspension plus the dial in suspension seat. We demo'd a 72" AOS model and rode smoother than anything else we've ever seen (including Ferris), cut awesome, and is built stronger than anything else I've seen.

Can't beat the newer Ferris w/ high-back seats.

Terrific idea for your grandpa to get a ZTR! I'm kinda up there in years too, and I love mine. I kept my old tactor in case I ever needed it for backup, but my ZTR is such a pleasure to operate that I thank the Lord I haven't had a need to fire up the old beast again.

Yeah, The Hustler Super Z with Flex forks is unbelievably smooth. And I hear the flex seat is even better.

It already has the cup holders just needs a higher foot rest and a TV.
