We were out doing a little work this week and run across six snakes in one day at different places. I have never seen snakes out this early, none of them were moving very fast.

I got one. Last summer, I was pulling up to a customer's house, and saw (what looked like) a 10' cobra, standing, hood flared, in the middle of the street. I thought it was fake until it struck at my truck.

My girl is a snake freak, so I called her. She decided it was a non-venomous bull snake. The thing was mimicking a cobra, and his head was about 4' off of the ground.

I called my buddy Mr. Gore and he confirmed that the early snake emergence is all part of climate change. He assured me it wasn't something to really worry about, since the new and improved strain of coyote will quickly decimate the snake population.

I came across a huge black snake last year in the back of a customers yard, it was abut 7ft long and pretty thick, it saw me, but wasnt threatened, as it just started moving into some thick brush, it was not in a hurry either. I didnt mess with it, something that big I just let it do its thing, and I stay away. I do not kill snakes anyway, no matter what size they are. They are just another animal out there trying to find food or feed their young, as long as you dont bother them , they will not bother you. If you give them time, they will move out of your way so you can continue working. But some idiots out there like to kill whenever they get the chance?

Its called a Hognose snake or something like that. I havent seen one in years but they are around. They flare out their neck just like a cobra. They actually play dead too. If you see one laying upside down in the yard and go pick it up it will be far from dead. They are harmless and eat frogs and other small rodents.

If I saw any of those snakes that have been pictured, I would sh!t myself. I get freaked out by the little 1 foot long snakes. If I saw something that was 7 feet or one that looked like a cobra....my nice yellow seat on the Deere would no longer be yellow. And I'm pretty sure I'd have the big one and die right there.

As long as you dont bother a snake, they will leave you alone too(most of the time). Its only when someone gets too close, do they get aggressive! They are more scared of us then we are of them anyway. When they get aggressive, they are simply warning you to back off or are protecting their young> Think about it, you would do the same thing to a strange person that came too close to you or your children! Plus they only bite as a last resort, they will give you plenty of warnings first, and if you stick around after that, then maybe you need to be bit?!!! I will not kill anything when Im out mowing, I just wait and let the snake slither away. With the mower or trimmer going, they dont stick around long anyway! They do not like the vibrations given off by equipment.

You have never seen me around a snake. Last time a snake slithered in front of me, I screamed like a girl and ran about 100 feet in about 3-4 seconds (kid you not), I'm not a runner but I can move really quick when I need to. And that snake was only about 20" long and it was about a foot in front of me. Trust me, I am more afraid of the snake than they are of me.

And I would never run over a snake while I'm mowing. One, then they get all cut up under my deck and make it dirty, so I'd have to get under the mower and clean out all the snake guts. Two, if I'm bagging I don't want to suck it up and have whats left of it in my bagger. And lastly, I would't want to leave snake pieces all over my customers' lawns, because I wouldn't be picking up the pieces.

I understand, My ex-wife and my current GF are terrified of snakes! Even though I try to explain to them what is in my last reply, they dont care, and will run also if they see one! Snakes are actually good to have around, they will take care of rats, mice and other un-desireable pests. I avoid killing anything because I do not like to kill, not because of what it would do to my deck. I do not think I have the right to kill anything, no matter what it is! My GF even is scared of large worms, cause they look too much like a snake!!! I laughed when she told me this!
