1st of all new to the site. But it seems as if i made a million dollers by just reading the post great info here.. My ? is ... When you lay sod down why do they rototil the dirt then lay top soil down level it remove more dirt and then lay the sod down..

I was taught this way so I always did it. But to me it would seem smart to to grade and remove the old dirt (with mini skid steer)and add top soil.....

Its cheaper to just rototill and lay the sod, the roots will penetrate lose soil better then rock hard soil.

It may be because of the area you are in. If the original top soil is not of good quality then that extra work is necessary. Here in the Midwest we usually just scrape the surface to loosen the soil then roll the sod out.
