When I worked at TG we had a small cheap soil probe (Lesco brand i think). The best soil probe I found has a alligator opening for easy inspection and removal of soil. Klee Hole Spade soil probe. We use it for soil test (I try to sell one to every customer) & to see what the soil is like under the grass (rocks, clay, compaction, ect.). What soil probe do you use?

The one's from AM Leonard serve well and Gempler has a couple of higher end units and one with a step if you have dificult soils.

Barry, I like that one for taking samples to be tested, but I usually go much deeper when able.
