Specing out a new truck

    I was specing out a new F-450 out of curiosity seeing as I can't find a good used F-450 4x4.

    You know what the 6.0 option is worth its 7000.000 dollars CND you want the torque shift thats another 1200 dollars. I usually only put 13,000kms per year on my truck (8000 miles) a 6.0 PSD isn't worth the money.

    A V-10 averages 10 mpg so my fuel cost would be 3,436 dollars for a year
    A 6.0 in a F-450 only gets 13mpg at most my fuel cost 2478 per year.

    Right now regular gas is 4.32 a gallon and diesel fuel is 4.03 a gallon just for kicks the price of propane is 3.33 a gallon.

    The fuel savings would take 7 years for it to pay for itself. Then the 6.0 costs more to repair good luck on getting 7 years of trouble free service out of it. I know some 6.0 Fords that have to go to the dealer almost monthly for repairs.

    I can see why a F-450 4x4 cab and chassis with a 6.0 PSD costs close to 47,000 dollars CND with the diesel option being 7000 dollars.

    I don't think I will be buying a new truck its not worth spending that kind of money on a truck that you really only get 4 years of reliable service out of.

    I dont think that you will find a 450 with an auto tranny that will get 13 going down hill with a good tail wind! So I wouldnt base your numbers off of that.

    My current 95 F-450 gets 12mpg 7.3 PSD 5spd I read on tow 411 that the new 6.0 F-450 tow trucks get about 12mpg.

    It makes you wonder why people would want the 6.0 when it costs a extra 7000 and we all know how reliable the 6.0 is.

    You are right in that for what the diesel option costs you can buy an awful lot of gas. I think that your estimate of 10 mpg in a V10 powered F450 is wildly optimistic. That's what I get in my Chevy 6.0 gas 2500HD in mostly city driving. I have a V10 powered E450 motorhome that gets 7.5-8 mpg in mostly freeway driving. You'll probably get 8-9 mpg with the V10, which is still way better than the old 460.

    I know 10 mpg would prolly be the best a V-10 can do but we don't have high speed limits here it is illegal to do 62 mph. We do have 10% grades so that does burn fuel.

    I just had to buy a CPS for my 95 the other day it cost me 312 dollars it was the cheapest I could get it for. The Ford dealer is the only one in the area that I could get it from the International dealer is 150 dollar trip or more for me to drive there and back. It takes couple days to mail order and courier is over night but costs 10 bucks. I had to get the truck repaired so I'am 312 dollars poorer for a little plastic part but its needed or a PSD doesn't run.

    About 6 months ago I had to buy a lift pump that cost me 500 dollars installed. Fuel filters for a 7.3 is close to 50 dollars a oil filter another 25 dollars then 5 imperial gallons of Delo 400 another 60 dollars.

    Its not cheap repairing a diesel in B.C. because parts are expensive.

    I've owned F-350 trucks for a long time. Started with the 460 V8, then owned 2 V10's with 4.30 gears. I think the F-450 comes with 4.88 gears. I was only getting 9 to 10.5 MPG in town and 5.5 to 6 MPG towing 10,000# at 75 MPH. With the 4.88's you'll get even less.

    Right now I own two 6.0 trucks with the TorqShift. We get about 13.5 to 14.5 MPG in town. Towing the same load as before I get about 9 MPG. Fuel miles seems to be about 50% better.

    Yes, maintenance costs are cheaper in the gas vehicle, but diesels hold their value better. You will get your investment back when you sell the vehicle AND get better fuel mileage than the V-10. I get $5000 to $6000 (U.S. dollars) more for the diesel truck on resale, and the trucks were identical other than the engine.

    If you buy a diesel truck, be sure to get one before the 2007 emissions are in place. These new emissions are going to really hurt performance. The new Cummins is going to 6.4L up from 5.9L and will have the same horsepower and nearly the same torque ratings. Ford is also increasing displacement up from 6.0L to 6.4L with little performance gains. My Kenworth dealer told me the same thing with big truck engine. I have a feeling you could get a new diesel now and sell it at a premium in a few years when people see how bad performance is with the new emissions.

    If I'am going to buy a truck it will be with the 7.3 PSD its reliable its proven yes it burns a little more fuel than others but it works. I know of a few trucks that have had nothing but problems with the 6.0 they are the 03 models mind you.

    As for big trucks I have talked with o/op truck drivers they said the new emmisions crap and the partical filter on the new trucks are nothing but troubles. I think you will find this new emmisions crap is going make trucks very expensive to repair and add alot to the cost of trucking.
