Spike then seed

I did a small preliminary experiment which was not irrigated--but a few rains occurred. I used annual ryegrass at about 20 pounds per thousand sqft as an overseed planting, over an old bluegrass/ryegrass lawn. Annual ryegrass comes up quick and it is light green; it is easy to tell the old grass from this new grass. The plots were 1 foot square. Before sowing the seed, I punched holes in the turf to a depth of about 2 inches--using a large screwdriver. Holes were punched at 50, 100 and 150 per square foot. One plot had no holes, serving as untreated control.
The results were: that there was only a very slight visible increase in grass thickness at 150 holes per sqft.
