PJ - How do you know when a blade spindle goes bad? On my 60" Super Z the 2 outside spindles are tight and when I grease them the grease comes out of the "overflow" hole just above the grease zert when full. The middle spindle seems a little looser but not bad. When I grease this spindle the grease comes out around the spindle when it's full, not out of the "overflow" hole. Is there an indication on performance when the spindle goes out? Mowing quality go down?

I would first remove the grease fitting and make sure the overflow slot is not plugged up.
If it is ok then I would remove the spindle and disassemble and inspect the bearings for their seals and also check bearing play in the housing.
As to it affecting cut quality... not so much... unless the bearings are freezing up and the blade isn’t turning correctly.

just curious, when the spindles do go bad on a version that doesn't have a zerk, can you replace it with a new one that has a zerk?

Not with a Hustler ductile cast iron spindle that has the grease fitting, no.

The spindle will roar while you mow sometimes too from the play. You'll hear it.
