I am new to the lawn fertilizing and spraying business. (but I am fully licensed and insured in the state of colorado) I have just bought a new Spyker model 64 spreader (the 40 pound stainless steel one because that is what the guy before me had and that is what my dealer sells) Anyway I puchased a barrier shield for it to edge with when I spread fert and Dimension. It is similar to a deflector plate but this one slides on the front into 2 tracks and covers the front and 2 sides and turns it into a drop spreader. My question is do I need to cut down on the hopper opening since I am only doing a 2 foot wide path or do I leave it as is. My salesman says leave it alone but the lady at Spyker says cut it by half (she thinks) or does it make any difference? Any help would be appreciated because I don't need to screw up somebodies lawn just yet. Thank you in advance for your replies.

I say you are right (also the lady at Spyker). You have to cut it back because you are covering less sqft per pass. Weigh it; spread 1000 sqft; weigh how much you used by difference. Adjust and repeat. Mark the low setting with permanent marker on the hopper.
