    They are digging up old nuts and acorns from the fall when they buried them.

    My dad has a moss yard just like the OPs and the squirrels don't cause damage, it's the raccoons and whitetail deer. Those deer are really hard on it. They can take out giant patches of moss overnight, and they do this every night.
