Starter Repeatedly Engages and Disengages

Hello,

I have a scag turf tiger (
STT61V-29DFI-SS) with a starting issue. I pulled the starter off (still hooked up) and have manually grounded it.

When turning the key, the gear will bounce in and out and rotate slowly. I measured voltage at the energizer wire on the solenoid and it is getting a fairly constant measure (or at least according to my cheap multimeter).

When I jump the hot post with the energizer post on the solenoid, the starter engages and spins normally.

Here’s a link to a video showing the engage/disengage issue.

Any thoughts on what to try next is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Marshall

Could be a bad key switch, or loose connection in the mower start circuit. check all yer grounds , and fuses/holders also. Check the PTO switch /connector.
Get ya a wiring diagram from the Scag site.

Well, this was rather odd. Turned out to be a bad battery. I would not have expected that given the behavior of the starter when operated by the switch off the motor. The battery was reading about 12.8 volts and my battery charger said it was fully charged but it couldn’t deliver the needed amps.

Swapped it out with another battery and I was good to go.

Thanks for all suggestions bc I was stumped!
