Hello everyone. My name is Jesus and I am the owner of Grow Control Landscape in Los Angeles. I have been in the industry for about 10 years now. I used to work for my father, then I moved on to a big multimillion dollar company called Marina Landscaping Inc. I finally settled where I am now, which is working for my present company called Garden View Landscaping Inc.

Well, I finally decided to break away from working for everybody else and started my own business. I don't have any clients yet. I have all the professional experience I need, and the years to back me up. I need help with obtaining my first clients.

Please don't just write, "advertising" or something related. I'm looking for good answers that will somewhat explain in detail what I should do, what type of advertising to invest in first, etc. Explained, not just simple answers.

    Thanks LawnSite Community

How much of a advertising budget do you have? what are your goals? who are you trying to reach, how many clients do you want, or can handle? If you've worked for such big companies and have all this experience why would you not know all this? Just curious.

Just go door to door that was how I started and it works. All they can say is no or yes. Just be ready to hear no more than yes you will need thick skin but it works

oiboy. if you already worked for a company, see how they advertised.

it depends on your area, but you can do door to door, talking to people and passing out flyers. There is a service called every door direct mail from USPS but its obviously more costly. about $.15/ flyer and they mail it out to a zip code and mail route on that zip. there are a number of specific requirements for your flyers design and layout for it to be elligable. You also must go to the specific post office the route is and drop them off. they must be a certain size and in bundles of 50. some of the flyer sites will do this stuff for you for more money.
craigslist can work well too depending on your area.
    good luck

i tried door to door but it didn't work for me at all. most everyone had someone already or cuts their yard themselves.

i tried fliers and that didn't work either.

the best way to start off is word of mouth and newspaper ad. that's what worked for me.

Thanks to all for the replies.

Also, CPLAWNCARE. I worked as a maintenance foreman on the field for huge landscape companies. I didn't sit in an office and deal with advertising. Besides the companies are already out there loaded with work. The only advertising I ever saw done was our uniforms, our safety vests had our company logos printed, and our trucks were printed. Having landscape maintenance experience is no where close to running the business or advertising.

Besides, when I worked for Marina Landscaping Inc. We did the maintenance for Magic Way, Disneyland Drive, and part of Disneyland here in Anaheim California. That alone is massive advertising with the amount of people who pass by. We also maintained the outside perimeter of Angel's Stadium.

Word of mouth is the best I have found on getting customers. Probably too late now, but starting in your spare time and getting a few customers and then going out on your own would of been my 1st choice.
