Hi guys and gals, question is this... I am into cutting grass edging blow off hedge trimming. I have had a couple of requests on remulching some flower/shrub beds. Do you rake up all old mulch and then put down a preemergent then put mulch down? I am curious as to the exact steps on doing this procedure. Many thanx guys.

Speaking only for hardwood or shredded mulches, if the old mulch is not overly thick, say greater than 3", then leave it lie and place new mulch on top. I usually go with 1-2" which will decompose by the following year to be reapplied again. Be careful when applying mulch not to pile it up against the truck of trees or stem of plants as this will not only suffocate, but will trap moisture causing an array of problems including insect infestation. As for the preemergent, assuming you are licensed to perform, this should be applied after the new mulch is laid.
