I have two customers that want bids for Austin stone/mortar flower beds around their trees. I have very little experience with masonry work. How important is a concrete footer for the base. The soil around here is either clay or rock not much in-between. I was thinking about a 6" x 6" or maybe 6" by 4" footer with rebar. I have also heard of driving rebar in the ground to prevent mortar-cracking/shifting. The slope of the yard is minimal.. Only 1' or 1-1/2' of stone will be visible at the front and no more than 6" at the rear. The bed will be 6 or 8 in diameter depending on what the customer wants. Does this sound like overkill? Suggestions comments greatly appreciated!!
