Ever pull start a diesel engine? Start all engines that way and your rope should last a long time. Pull the rope until you feel compression. Let it recoil back in and then pull. This should help prolong your rope. Explaining this method to some older folks has let many of them keep their recoil start lawn mower when they were in the market for an electric start mower. I of course have no ideal how you start this but that sudden jerk when the engine hits compression is typically what shortens rope life. Many owner's manuals used to have those instructions under starting instructions.
