What type of gravel/rock works the best for keeping weeds out? I have used decomposed granite, but I still have to spray too often.
    Any help?

weeds will grow out of cracks in the side walk or over the top of fabric, so keeping the soil dry is our first step. AS far as I know there is no way to stop weeds w/out a healthy dose of pre-m.

I don't use fabric, but with small river rock, I try and go at least 4" deep. Does that sound about right?

4" is a good depth. The problem is that wind will blow in weed seed from other areas. All it takes is a little moisture and the weed seeds will germinate. A good quality pre-m is about your only solution.
