I have lost two controllers to lightning in the past 10 months. (Hunter ICC 800)
I was thinking of installing a timer to create an open circuit when the controller is not in use. ( I have a timer on hand).
The only time the controller would be susceptible is when the circuit is closed and the timer is running.

Will the 9 volt battery carry the program when the 110 power is unavailable to the controller and for how long at 15 hrs a day under battery power?

Does anyone have input on what I should do to eliminate the threat of lightning on my controllers?

How about this device for $190.00?

grounding rods help tremendously, usually the strike come through the valves and not the home.
