Does anyone use the "Back Saver" that was at Expo? It looks like a great investment for those heavy trailer gates and was just wondering if they really work as good as they look?
Tractor supply has "sheaves" for pulley applications. The smallest is 2". There are 2 different kinds, 1 for rope and 1 for wire rope(cable). I've ordered 4 of them for my trailer. I saw the backsaver yesterday(in a box) in a mower shop. I like the design but wonder if the cable just runs over 2 bolts in the back? If so, does this wear quickly? I thought about putting a couple of roller bushings over the bolts to help the cable? Anybody got info on how the "backsaver" is built?
The back saver is a great product never hear any complaints. Yes you can always buy some after market parts to build one but have you ever seen a spring break and shot toward you. Stay safe purchase something that is built and tested for the job.
I have heard that after a few years, or if the spring is stretched too far that it can "explode" into several pieces thus mimicking a loaded gun shooting shrapnel in every direction. I have heard of guys running a safety cable through the spring. Can you run the cable through the center of the spring then attach the safety cable to the ends of the spring with enough slack on the cable to let the spring run its full length of travel as the gate goes up/down?
If I go this way, I'm going to use the heavier springs (1 on each side) so it's not overloaded. I have thought about safety and there are some things you can do to help. You can put a heavy bolt through the ends to keep the spring inside the METAL enclosure. You can also restrict the opening where the cable comes out of the METAL enclosure and put some sort of cable stop on it so it won't WHIP out at you if it comes off the spring. I think my trailer top edge is 3-4 inches wide at least so I could put 2 large bolts side by side to restrict the spring and the cable from shooting out either end.
