Did you know that your ordinary everyday dish soap can also double as a powerful yet safe alternative to environmentally harmful pesticide? Yes, that's right, that bottle of Dawn you have perched on the edge of your sink is a Insect KILLER.. It also just so happens to be DIRT CHEAP! Your garden variety insecticide will easily run you $12-$16 and the cost to the environment is much greater. A bottle of DAWN Dish Soap (24 fl oz) is about $2.74 at Walmart. The bottom line is it's very inexpensive.

According to The National Coalition for Pesticide-Free Lawns,of the 30 commonly used non organic lawn pesticides, 19 are linked with cancer or carcinogenicity, 13 are linked with birth defects, 21 with reproductive effects, 26 with liver or kidney damage, 15 with neurotoxicity, and 11 with disruption of the endocrine (hormonal) system. Of those same pesticides, 17 are detected in groundwater, 23 have the ability to leach into drinking water sources, 24 are toxic to fish and other aquatic organisms vital to our ecosystem, 11 are toxic to bees, and 16 are toxic to birds.

Poisons are absorbed through the skin, by the mouth, or by breathing sprays, dusts, or vapors. You or your children can be poisoned if you apply or are present during application of the chemical. Also if you touch contaminated grass, shoes, clothing, lawn furniture, etc., or put contaminated objects (toys, golf tees, blades of grass etc.) or fingers in the mouth.

For the last 30 years, Dawn dish detergent has been the number one choice of wildlife rehabilitators in cleaning up the messes caused by oil spills in the ocean. It is very forgiving towards the environment- you can use it outside without worrying about chemical pollution, killing grass, or other general harm to the environment. It has no fumes and is totally biodegradable.

Even though virtually one of the Safest products on earth,Dawn does, however, have the capability to cause some harm. According to Texas A&M University,Soapy water and detergents can kill insects as effectively as insecticides. The active ingredient in insecticidal soap is potassium salt of fatty acids. Insecticidal soaps such as Dawn detergent are what you would call contact insecticides that dissolve the insect's exoskeleton and disrupt the cell membrane. They remove the protective wax on the insect and thereby cause death. Brutal... Right?

Green gardeners use a mild soap and water solution (a couple teaspoons soap per gallon of water) to kill bugs on plants. Dawn is effective against soft-bodied arthropods such as aphids, scales, whiteflies, mealybugs and spider mites. Boxelder bugs and Japanese beetles are two larger insects that are also eradicated by using a soap bug spray. Liquid detergent bug sprays do not harm other small beneficial insects such as ladybugs, lacewings and bees.

A few drops of soap in a gallon of water can be sufficient. Adding a few drips of oil helps the soap stick to the plant and continue to kill insects. For spraying plants indoors, adding 1 tsp. to a hand sprayer of water is recommended. Some plant varieties are harmed by contact with soap. Use a diluted solution and test one plant a few days before doing a general spraying. Repeated applications may be necessary for a heavy infestation of insects to be eradicated.
