This is why when I ordered my new trailer I had it made with a pintil hitch not a ball hitch. just makes it harder for them to steal. They'll have to get a new hitch to steal it and most want spend the money for these hitches.

Youre misinformed if you think it matters what hitch you have or what size. If a pro wants your trailer they dont even hook up like that. They will take chains or straps and drag it off in 5 seconds flat to somewhere safe to hook up for the long haul. No tongue locks will stop them if its a real pro. the best way is to somehow sieze up the wheels. However all chains and cables can be cut. If not then God help you if you ever lose THAT KEY!

Your best bet is LoJack. They will never see it and it reasonably priced. We had 4 trailers (box trailers) stolen @ different times at work and the only one ever recovered had loJack. A Texas State trooper picked up the signal and tracked to a guys house just a few blocks from the original owners place! This guy had a few acres with all kinds of trailers there. Boats, Seadoos..u name it.
Unless you live in BFE and they dont have any Systems in the police cars. The problem is though the trailer isnt worth beans, its the contents. So if it takes them a day to find your $6K trailer the $20K contents will be gone already. They can put a Lojack on a rider if you want. Ive heard of them being put on truck mounted generators.
They should make these systems mandatory on new cars. Heck, probably only raise the cost $50. This would save the insurance Co and the consumers billions. With the insurance savings the cost more than pays for itself.:gunsfirin

I think I'll go outside right now and lock everything down. It's easy to get caught off guard. I have been too lucky I guess for the last 11 years and sometimes leave it all unlocked ( blowers, mowers and trailors etc). This time of year the thiefs really come out of the cracks. Thanks for the reminder !

Dennisf That is how one of my trailers is made the tounge of the trailer is made like a reciver hitch with a pin. I pull the pin and the hitch slides out leaving only a square tube.

I have also been hit hard this year with theft. over the year they have got 9 chain saws, pole saw, some tree working supplies,(all this when they broke into the bucket truck). They have also stolen 5 echo 650 blowers all at seperate times. I have tried different cables and lock but they have always cut them. I have done a lot of research and after the hollidays I'm going to try this http://www.surveillance-equip.com/surveillance2.html i would love to know where this stuff is going to.

Thanks Mike

On that topic just to say that you can do a thing like GPS but better called APRS if you become an amateur radio operator. I am one, and with it you can track wherever the transmitter is at any time via the computer. So, it would not be a bad idea for anybody who is worried about stolen equipment or is wondering what their crews are doing during the day. Just my 2 cents.

If anyone has a proven method for trailer security, I’d like to hear it. Parking in a fenced yard is not an option for me.
Back your trailer up to the garage and leave it hooked up to your truck. Leave literaly inches of room between your trailer and the garage and they'll never take the trailer even if they tried. And by doing that, they can't open the gate. Of course if they want to move your truck, that's a different story.

We also had some stuff stolen this year. We have a list of equipment that we keep current. Also we engrave our business name in several places on the equipment. On some of the small stuff, like for instance, a Shin weedeater, the serial number is on a small decal which is easily removed. So we etch the serial number into the unit somewhere. We also etch the date we placed the unit in service. We have been able to recover some of our items that were stolen. The cops raided a drug house and found some lawn care stuff. ours was there and because it was marked and we had the serial numbers recorded, we got our stuff back.

I had a trailer (open flatbed ) stolen a few years back. Now I amke it mandatory that a trailer is parked a vehicle is parked right next to the tongue -----------------

Just make it an inconvienence for the thief to steel it. I've found it only takes a minute to move a truck in front of the trailer and keep the tongue as close to the door as possible. We also when leaving a trailer at a job site back the trailer into a curb then lower the front of the trailer so a truck can park over the tongue.

It's not fool proof but most thiefs are looking for easy jobs, not something that will cause them extra effort.

Anythig worth shooting is worth shooting twice...

We use @Road for tracking our vehicles, live viewing of every vehicle and trailer location, speed, direction, where they stopped and for how long, some trucks even have door sensors to tell when the doors open/close, ignition sensors to tell if teh truck is running or idling, we can see where every crew is at any point during the day.

Wouldn't work in Mi. Even in your home, you must prove you didn't have an escape, be for you can shoot, stab, what ever.

video surveillence camera's and alarm and if you want to enjoy yourself mount a very strong electric fence charger in the trailer connected to a solar panel on the roof to charge the battery. Use a rubber key to turn on/off the system. Key mounted inconspicuously. Whenever the system is turned on it will shock anyone who touches the trailer/hitch etc. Really enjoyed watching someone try to break into my trailer once!

As a person who builds trailers in the off seasen let me remind you of this.......trailers can be stolen without even undoing the locks. The lever type trailer hitch commonly used on lighter trailers can be hooked up without removing the lock. It is really a simple process but the fix can be just as simple. With a lock installed through your hitch and it not hooked to your trailer it seem secure right? Wrong. All a thief has to do is to take a wrench and remove the adjusting nut and the part that secures the ball inside the coupler will come out. Place the coupler onto the towing hitch and replace the adjusting screw and drive off. Notice I never said touch the lock........the thief can worry about that later. Best advice...chain a very large dog to your trailers. The fix can be as simple as the problem. Simply have a welding buddy weld a "glob" onto the end of the threaded adjusting shaft so that the nut cannot come completely off.

The problem with this is a thief just needs an end like you removed and he's off. Be sure u put the pin back in and lock it.

He said he slides out the hitch leavinga square tube....like a receiver hitch. Well if you just leave it missing then somebody with the same type setup could slide thiers in and be off with your trailer.
