This is normal, right?

    Half a liter is hardly 2 quarts of oil....when the engine was running...the pan and oil pickup were dry.
    The clean plug could have been from a bad coil (not firing)
    It was probably running on 1 cylinder for awhile.

    i did lose quite a bit of oil as well while I tore it down

    I've done hundreds of teardowns on scattered engines....
    Without a close examination of all the pieces...you just never know.
    The end result is usually a new engine.
    In any case...it was probably avoidable by doing some routine maintenance.
    It is possible the damage was done before you got it...who knows....
    Check the oil and filters regularly and you won't have many posts like these....
