Thoughts on these two trucks, 99 F250 or 96 F250

    looking for a reb cab long bed 3/4 ton for pulling my open landscape trailer for mowing(instead of always driving my dually w/ enclosed trailer)save on some fuel
    and on occassion pull my gooseneck with the tractor/or skidsteer

    found these two truck within a few blocks of my house.

    truck one:
    1996 Ford F250, white, reg cab/long bed
    7.3L powerstroke diesel (285,000 miles:dizzy:)
    auto tranny, new alternantor, starter
    work truck, manual windows locks etc.
    truck is in pretty good shape(needs a new tailgate, has some dings/scratches, front bumper is a lil bent) will prolly need tires.

    truck two:
    1999 Ford f250 XL, white, reg cab/long bed
    5.4L V8 (190,000miles:dizzy:)
    auto tranny, manual windows/locks
    truck is immaculate, not a scratch or dent on it, interior is damn near perfect
    brand new tires
    both are priced the same $2k

    Tough decision. The gas burner would likely cost you less if you ended up having to replace say...and engine. It's less CI but it's less costly to maintain. The diesel likely tows better but could at this point rip into your wallet...injector pump...engine. Who knows?

    I think I'd go with the gasser.

    I think with those mileages I'd go with the gasser too. Not only will it be cheaper to repair (and significant repairs in the not too distant future are likely in either truck), but a work truck with that kind of mileage in immaculate condition is a big plus in my book. A lot of work trucks are torn to shreds by 200K so one that's clean like that probably wasn't used for too rough of work and was obviously well cared for. Good luck!

    they both could nickel & dime you...gasser would probably be lesser nickels at a time...

    i went and looked at the 99' again the owner came out and chatted with me. he lives about 1 1/2 from here, said all the miles are highway, truck was strictly used for driving to work, never pulled anything with it. he had a folder in the glove box, with all the reciepts for every service the truck has had since he bought it new in 99. i was shocked. ill try to take a pic of it 2morrow.

    Go with the 96 , that was a good year for the 7.3 , plenty of power and easy to fix

    Id go with the 99. But sight unsean the records are nice to have and look at....are they rusted anywhere?

    No rust on the 99. the 96 has some in the rear hitch area from launching boats in saltwater. the 96 was used to haul crab traps and pull a boat.

    ill run and snap a few pics of the 99 in the morning. my first truck was 99 F150, i pulled all types of trailers with it. had great power and it was just the small 4.6l v8. this 99 f250 has the 5.4l.

    Ok. Nice engine. Fairly easy to get at and work on. Not super bad on gas...not as good as diesel tho. 99 parts are easy to get and can go all the way to 08.....some. 96 really can't swap out for newer bs parts

    96 for me.
