I would like to take the tops out of pines, and trim them up. how much of the top is safe to take with harming the tree?

Trees should NEVER be topped!. That is one of the worst things you can do to a tree. You can prune off 1/3 of the new growth on each candle if you would like so that you can have a fuller pine tree.

I agree with everything that has been said - if god wanted tree to look like Tom's picture he would have made birds with chainsaws attached to there feet (A good shirt one of my old Prof's had.)

    I do have a question or 2.

Why do you have to "top" the tree anyway? Is selective pruning not an option??

Wrong plant for wrong site "Use your vision not your sight." A wise man once told me that.

    Under utilities?

I wanted to chime in here to let you know about our new tree forum - www.treeservicessite.com - just thought you may be interested in continuing a discussion there as well.

    Have a good one :)
