Hey I live in New York and did some topsoil installation and seed about a month ago. Now every grass that I installed topsoil on has crab grass in those spots. Why is that? HELP!

Timing of crab control sounds about right. Working up the soil to plant new grass breaks the crabgrass barrier--crabgrass seeds buried in the soil may then arise.

OR...the soil you used could have had last year's crabgrass seed in it. Not likely.

Try Ortho's Weed and Crabgrass Control. If not, frost will kill crabgrass in October.

It was kind of too hot about a month ago. You will have less trouble with new crabgrass germinating at this time than you did then. Riggle knows more about seeding in hot weather than I do but I know he is a believer.

You brought in topsoil??? in late June , early July and seeded it down with grass seed??? CG is always going to be a problem at that time of year if the soil is contaminated with CG...
The pre-m you put on the lawn in March is not going to affect the topsoil brought in later...

Here is a spot of crabgrass sprayed with quinclorac on my lawn about 4 days ago, July 27th. It is OK to reseed right away--if I wanted.

It is best in the northern states to wait to reseed until about mid-August, or when temps come down below 85. Or...about 8 weeks before frost. Cool night temps will block crabgrass germination and early growth in the fall. Crabgrass is not a problem when temps cool off in the fall.

Grass seed sprouts fast In August (if the soil is moist) because the soil temperature is high.
