    i heard that topsoil at depth can rot. what does it mean to "rot", and what depth would this occur at.

    don't know that a mineral soil can rot but it could go "sour" if it is constantly wet and heavily compacted..In interior landscaping where soiless mixes are used the soil often "rots" as the peat in it decomposes and therefore the soil levels require replenishing. Don't know if this would apply outside too
