Toro 2-cycle SURGING

    have 3 toro 2 cycles and am dealing with on and off terrible surging with them... 2 are late 80's one of which one I cleaned the Carb/jets/etc and the surging stopped.

    My primary 2002 2 cycle model never had problems until early last year and I have not had a good "no surge week" in quite some time...I have tried spark plugs/Carb jet cleaning/ gov. spring/ fuel filter/ etc... If anyone has any tips or long term fixes your information would be greatly appreciating as every once in a while the mower won't cut any grass because of a load...some times the mower will work flawlessly until after 20 min.s of mowing and then start the constant RPM cycle...

    Three things you might check.

    1. Make sure the fuel line is not bumping up against the governor arm.

    2. Did you clean the pilot jet on the top side of the carb?

    3. Worn throttle shaft, sucking air through the excess space. Spray a little carb/choke cleaner at the top of the throttle shaft and note if rpm changes when you do so. In my experience, this is the most common problem when a
    suzuki 2 stroke surges.

    Ditto on #3 this is the most common for older units in my experience.

    Ok great I haven't checked on # 3 and will look into this and look for RPM change.....THANKS

    Is the fuel line new? It may be cracked a bit causing the engine to run lean.

    If the throttle shaft is worn (as per #3), can the shaft just be replaced or does the whole carb need to be replaced?

    Replace the carb. The shaft hole is worn, if this turns out to be problem. Also, spray around the heat isolator. There may be an intake gasket leak.

    I have had the same trouble with my 2 cycle Toro. Almost exactly as you describe. Good luck finding a Carb, they discontinued these engines. I tried everything listed above with no luck. I even took it to the dealer. They were more clueless. In my opinion, it is a governor seal issue. See if there is a dirt build up around the governor shaft. These engines need to be sealed tight. The next thing I did was put a Kawasaki on it. Fixed it right up :)
