I just bought my first walk behind last night. Its a toro 36" with a 12.5 horse kawi. Its gear drive and its pretty old but i figured it would be a good machine to start out with. The problem is the transmission does not want to pull itself in 4th gear. It came with a Sulky and i was thinking that maybe being pulled with a rider on it may have just worn it out of 4th gear. All the other gears work pretty good. I would like to know what is wrong and how much it will cost to get working as it should. I plan on doing any reapirs myself so cost is just for parts. Thanks for any suggestions or advice.

Before you tear into the tranny, look under the mower and make sure the drive belt is tight. If its ok, remove the top cover of trans , you will probably have to remove both drive axles first . lift out rear shaft , carefully slide parts off the shaft. Notice which way the bevels on the washers face . The most common wear parts for this failure would be the gear itself , the shift keys, and the bevel washers . Find the id tag on the gearbox and call your local Peerless/Techumseh dealer. Once you get past the grease, its not a bad job.

Yup, that belt is a killer, it likes to wear out and get loose like that,
the good news is that's about the only belt that wears and acts that way.
When it does wear out you should be able to use NAPA 4L-400W, $16
To my understanding most, if not all Toro's use that transmission belt.

Also the transmission isn't made by Toro, it's made by Tecumseh.

Word of advice:
DON'T SHIFT IT!

Pick a gear, any one will do, work with it for a bit and find the perfect gear that
you like to ride with, then select that gear once and never move that selector again.
To adjust speed, use the belts.

Oh, and don't get yourself in a situation where you need to use Reverse either lol

Seriously, because it's a whole lot cheaper and easier to replace belts than that dang peerless.
