I'm starting up this year, and am going to do residential lawns. I could really use some help deciding what to buy. How does a 20hp 42" deck tractor stack up to a 12hp 36" walkbehind?

    Here's some mowers I'm considering

12 year old light use Ferris hydrowalk 48"deck $750

10 year old personal use 12.5HP Gravely pro 36"deck with Proslide plate $850

    20HP Poulan Pro 42" $500

Also do a lot of customers require baggers?

The poulan is a homeowner mower which will not hold up to commercial or heavy use. The Ferris and Gravley are good machines and a good place to start. The are designed to be used, a lot.

Ferris 48 will work perfectly! Best mower by far.

I was thinking the 36" because people suggest it as a first mower because it can fit though gates.

What size are the lawns mainly? If smaller than half acre the 36 might be the best choice, but if they average more than half and acre I'd want to save time and get the 48". Skip that lawn tractor all together. It isn't even a good one.

Stay away from the tractor. I would go with the 48inch. How many hours on the machines, that is something you may want to note as well when making a decision.
