I have the opportunity to bet on a city contract. All of the trees are between 2 to 10 minutes far from travel.

I have to plant 182 trees 8 feet tall.

The hole have to be 4 feet deep and 4 feet large.

Approx* How long do you think it can take to make the 182 holes?

I have to take away the old soil and put new soil.

What would be the best method to do the job? Excavator or Auger?

Get an auger for the holes and use a couple of hands and a dolly for the 8' trees... much quicker and less damage than moving them with excavator...

4x4 hole. That's huge for a 8' tree. I don't think your going to find a auger bit that big either.

4 ft deep is rediculous. You will have lots of issues with the settling and problems with them staying upright. Would you add structural soil under the trees to give them the support they need. I would use an excavator to digg and remove the dirt. Skid steer to move the trees, fill the holes. You would probably need to compact the soil under the trees so they have support. Just my thought.

The idea of a four foot deep hole and the 'settling' issue to follow is a valid concern... I be sure to loosen the soil directly under the root ball but only enough to soak up lots of water and allow root penetration to start immediately...

The depth of the hole,,, should be determined by the depth of the root ball and the type of soil(texture) you're planting in... I would run the augur through the 182 holes ,,, at about 2.5 ft. deep,,, and then go back and start planting the trees...

How long is it going to take ,,, just to augur 182 holes???
