truck for wb

    i am looking at a 1990 ford diesel 1 ton, 4x4, dually, 92,000 miles, 4sp., aluminum flatbed, with a meyer hydro turn plow. the guy is asking 3500 or best offer, im a little low on cash right now, but i have a 5x8 landscape trailer(1 year old) and a 48inch belt driven bobcat walkbehind(only has 3 seasons on it) that i was going to try and sell this spring, thinking of offering it as a trade what do you think?

    if anyone thinks this would be a considered trade, or thinks i will have to throw another 3k along with the trade to get the truck let me know...

    no b.c if u were to sell that trailer u cld prob get around 400-500 nd the mower at least 1200-2200 bucks i would try and trade heads up or only put a grand out

    be aware, the diesel in that truck is NOT a powerstroke, its an older IDI model. keep your mower and trailer, look for something newer.

    are there problems with the older IDI model, i thought if a diesel was well maintained it could go 200-300k no problem

    there shouldnt be any problems with it, though I dont know the history of the one you're looking at to know. I also dont know everything about it, go to www.fordtrucks.com, and ask there in the diesel section, someone will offer an opinion there that is correct info.

    They like eating #3 cylinder exhaust valves at about 230-250K. You will hear considerable valve train noise and will be able to pick that up if you pull a compression test. Acceptabe compression should be 420-370 lbs per cylinder.

    Why number 3? Don't ask, can't tell. Had to do reman heads on 4 trucks at those milages. Cost per head, about a grand, exchange, not through Ford of course, they wanted $1,500 per head exchange.. Labor, about 8 hours, (the book calls for considerably more) lots of skinned knuckles, and black under the fingernails for a few days after. The head weighs about 140 lbs and ideally you need another person or a crane to help you spot it. We would remove the hoods and stand in the engine compartment and you could do it all by yourself.

    i have a '94 idi w/ 243,000 miles. it still runs great. the idi's aren't the most powerful of diesels but they do get good fuel milage and mine has been very reliable. another site to check is www.thedieselstop.com they have a section that is devoted to idi's. for the weight it sounds like you are going to tow it should do fine.
