Water Channel Barrier Material, etc?

I have got to give an estimate on repairing 2 water run-off channels, each going into decorative retaining ponds.

They are currently lined with landscape cloth for weed barrier, and very large rocks covering them. The water is erroiding the edges several inches and exposing the underside of barrier cloth's along those erroiding edges.

My goal is to remove everything, create new edges, lay down a new barrier, and actually tuck a couple of inches of barrier under the sod, and then lay new rockl ining the channels right up to the sod. In addition I will create a brand new channel also.

    Two questions:

    1. Is there a different or better barrier material that you know of or recommend over landscaping cloth?
    2. Have you ever "tucked it under the sod a couple of inches? and do you have any quick tips on the concept?

    Thank you all.
