Also i forgot to mention, is the spark plug you are using a resistor spark plug? If it's a non-resister plug, it can caue the coil to burn out prematurely

The unit is not that old. I maintain a 27 acre property in my spare time and the weed eater is only used for that application. I had a shindaiwa in the past and it worked great until it bit the dust but I could not complain since it was 18 years old. I decided to go out an buy another shindaiwa with the level of success i had with the other one assuming it would last me another 18 years problem free but i guess not. I went out and bought a t242 less than a year ago (9 months) and this was the only major issue i have encountered with it so far. I took it back to the lawnshop since it is under warranty because I would hate to work on a 300 dollar trimmer that is less than a year old.

What model is your old trimmer. Most parts are still available to do rebuilds and
its hard to beat an old Shindaiwa for reliability. That being said the 242 has been fairly reliable after the new model bugs were worked out.

The old trimmer I had was a Shindaiwa t18. Im shocked that it "lived" for that long.
