Looks like barnyard grass.

Smartweed--that was my first thought.
Barnyard grass is a strong possibility at this time of year.
It is like crabgrass only much bigger and reddish with the thick stems at the base.
Annual--killed by frost.

I think you are correct. Pennsylvania Smartweed.Smartweed--that was my first thought.
I’ve never seen this before in my area. Smartweed here is very different.

Smartweed, also called knotweed, a species of polygonum.
Hopefully not the early stages of Japanese knotweed.

Now that my friend is a serious weed!
I've got some of that across the road in a ditch and have been spraying it for years. Have succeeded in the patch getting smaller but doesn't go away.
Download the “picture this app” I think it’s like $30 per year. Invaluable tool for I.d. of all types of plants and weeds. I use this to identify weeds and ornamentals for service calls. Works very well and is very accurate.
