What do you think about a credit/debit card scanner?

    Was thinking about this and thought it would save time and make it easy for customers to pay. Is there something I can take with me in the truck to scan these things or what? Any other thoughts?

    they now have mobile cc units that you can take with you anywhere.

    Unless all your credit card customers are home, I do not think it makes sense.

    Hi, sounds like a good idea to me if you're makein collection calls [ in person] or if you do any kind of trade show or festival payup

    our billing department uses a credit card machine. the invoice includes a portion to fill out with the customers c.c. #, etc. it also comes in handy for collections, you can take c.c. #'s over the phone.

    rates and machine prices vary but they are well worth it. believe me, most customers would rather swipe the plastic than write the check.

    I have a friend that has a retail style of business in which he travels and sells products. He uses the CC swipe attachment to his Nextel phone and says it is great. I thought about this too.

    However, very few people are home when their yard is cut. So it is not worth it for me.

    What I have found to be invaluable is my website. I have a credit card link on there. And, I have found that nearly everyone has access to the web now a days. Even 80 year old granny's are surfin the web now.

    People have felt much more comfortable with giving the CC info over the net because it appears more reputable than "bubba" running their number from his home or over his phone.

    Here's what I was thinking...

    Like the auto payment for phone bills or even movie rentals now, you could just keep the card# and run it after every service and then send them their invoice. That would work wouldn't it?

    Connect to a cell phone?... neat.

    Oh yeah, sorry I didn't realize I started this thread in the wrong spot.

    Nextel has come out with a mobile device that goes on a phone and bills right then and there.

    Here is something to consider. Credit Card transactions are charged to the business (you) this way:

    1. A fee for each transaction

    and (plus)

    2. % of the transaction price

    For example: you mow a customer's lawn for $50 and they use their credit card to pay for it. The bank will charge you $.75 plus say 3% of the transaction. That will be a charge to you of $2.25 and of that $50 you keep $47.75.

    If you mow that same yard four times it will cost you $9.

    However, if you run one transaction at the end of the month for $200 (four cuts) your fee goes from $9 down to $6.75.

    This may not sound like much now but take that and multiply it by 50 accounts and you are now paying the bank $450 each month as compared to $337.50 each month.

    That my friend is a big difference just to bill them each cut instead of waiting to the end of the month and doing one invoice. Not, to mention that checks and cash are still KING!!!!

    The number of $.75 and 3% are not accurate. But, they are close to what most banks use. Check will your credit card lender to get the exact rates
