2003 GMC 2500 HD Duramax and 2001 GMC 2500 HD 8.1 ltr gas hog.
not sure how much of a ton that is but it pulls 3tons and since my mower is not even 1 ton it's got plenty enough power for me. saves me alot in gas money lol.

98 dodge 2500 diesel. next truck will be a dodge 3500 single rear wheel diesel
11' Ram 3500 dually 4x4, hope to add a utility body truck and a flatbed this year.

You should calculate how much weight you will be towing/hauling and get the next size up. If you size too high it's a waste of money. ( a lot of money, I saw ford trying to sell a $60K 1/2 ton PICKUP truck! "a fool and his money are soon parted"
Make sure you get the truck specs too, (1/2 ton 3/4 ton... are outdated terms)
My "1/2 ton" f150 is rated to haul 1766, yes that is OVER 3/4 ton.
But don't expect the state to understand that and give you a break on licensing (trucks over "3/4 ton" cost 1/10th the price to license in my state)

Here we are four years almost five later. I've still got the original half ton, added one and ran the piss out of it. Then traded it straight across for my 3/4 ton diesel! Never again will I have anything smaller than 3/4 for work. Now as an irrigation service truck, I may consider a half ton or perhaps even smaller?

The "norm" is what it takes to haul what you're hauling, including people.
Even the compacts can tow a light trailer equipped with brakes with a ZTR and a 21" on it. I've driven anything from a 2500 Chevy long bed (4,000 lbs capacity) to an S-10. They all work, it's a matter of fuel costs vs price and capacity. Some "big" trucks are actually lower rated for payload than some versions of compacts. Crew cabs, 4x4, etc reduce their capacity.
For what they cost these days, a Nissan Frontier would be a decent choice for someone who isn't hauling materials. A powerful V6, reliable, decent fuel economy, cheap. I use a 5.0 F150 FX4 supercab currently. Hellwig progressive helper springs make it pretty darn stable.
Some people don't mind the ride/handling/noise of an HD truck. I find it tiresome. I would also personally prefer a smaller, newer vehicle to a worn out HD diesel with hard miles on it that breaks down from time to time.
