I want to get involved into light excavating. Shed pads and do some finish work after sidewalks and patios are installed. What would you guys recommend and do you think this is a good business to embark on. I currently do maintenance and mowing.

My advice would be to look at your local market and see if it will allow you to be that specialized. I would think that expanding into landscape construction would seem to be the most logical extension of what you already do. Using that as a spring move into light excavation as you gain more experience with equipment and your local market. Knowing your local market is the key to success in my opinion. That will tell you the needs of your area and how much more competetion your market can handle in a given area. Once you know what areas you might be able to concentrate on, your equipment decisions can than be made. It is rather pointless to buy equipment then find a use for it. You tend to have to buy twice that way.
