When is the best time of the year to get a used mower?

Fall & winter, no one is buying then.

The hottest part of the summer when all the newbies realize just how hard this job is and call it quits.

As said above When it turns hot and at the end of the season
If you talk to the dealer he may be able to find a demo for you toward the end of the season

Ive got my eye on the grasshopper dealers demo this fall

There seems to be some consensus that you should buy in the off season ... I agree !!

Normally the best time from a buyers perspective would be when the equipment is not in demand which would be end of season or winter. However, my dealer told me yesterday that his business is down over $100k so far this year so, I would say get yourself a new mower now. You should be able to negotiate a very good deal. Tony

Hopefully we will see some good deals this fall, Can you really negociate on the MSRP or do just negocaite how the payments are made amount wise? Thanks Andy

I am a firm believer in everything being negotiable. I always ask for a discount. Sometimes I get it, sometimes I don't. Tony

If I am buying a used mower what sort of things should I look for ? how well it runs and it cuts and what else?

But Im not that good with engines, I always here you guys what conditon the spindles are in? What engine is better than others. I have heard Kawi is way better Kohler. So what should I not deal with....

Look at the edges of the deck and the under side really good. Make sure the baffles aren't bent up or damaged. Look at the top of the deck where the pulleys are. If they've hit things with the spindles and did serious damage, the top of the deck around the pulleys will be bent, the paint won't match the rest because they've heated it up with a torch to bend it back into place, then repainted it, etc. Check for abnormal whinning in the hydo pumps, take the drive tires off and look at the wheel motors, pull the dipstick out to look at the oil color after you ask them how long it's been since the last oil change, etc.

Off season, maybe late Nov./Early Dec.
Thats when I have managed to get the best deals on both tractors and motorcycles.

I just picked up a Scag 36" hydro adj. floating deck with mulch kit, bagger and sulky with very little use for $3k today
