Is there a general life span for the average blade or does it vary? Ours are starting to get a few nicks, that are so big that the blade can not be ground back enough to fix them. Is it time to buy some new blades? We've been using these for about 250 hours.

that is a long time, 250 hours. You should replace blades when you can't get an edge on them, they become rounded, and they become bent.
