A buddy is looking for a new mower. He and his son are both pushing 400lbs. They keep ruining box store riding mowers every couple years. He has some slopes including around a retention pond with no flat area before water edge. No chance they would push or trim around the pond. No experience on a ZT, and I suggested he avoid one lest he end up in the pond faster than he could blink.

So my thoughts are a garden tractor with geared tranny. Don't think he has need for a SCUT, or the budget really. He said $3k box store lawn mowers aren't cheap. I did some searching and haven't found much out there. What do you guys know about that I'm not finding?

Tell him he is looking at 8K and up and while he doesn't need a gear trans, and won't find one anymore either (not in a current GT) he needs to look at either a JD 500X series or larger, or the Simplicity equivalents. Their hydros will haul that much weight with ease, all day, every day. They come with PS and side by side hydro pedals and are darn enjoyable to run. I have owned several.

The Deere X5 entry level X570 (K72 transaxle) has a push/pulling capacity of 800 lb.
I myself would buy the X590 (K72) due to the EFI-spec Kawasaki engine.

The OP said he doesn't have a need or the budget for a SCUT. One would sure be useful, but that is why I didn't mention one.
Seems like his budget may make gone up. My brother said he was looking at a Ferrris IS200x. I haven’t seen the drainage pond personally, but think no experience on a ZT and doing a slope with no run out into the water is asking for trouble for him.
