Just starting new lawn care service, I have two accounts, one with 5 acres to mow. Which mower should I go for? Do the ZTRs really cut as fast as advertized?

I run Great Danes and love'em. Very fast mowers, however I would try ZTR's that are offered in your area. Test them out and see what ya like.

I would wait to buy a ztr. Build the business first, most ztrs start at about 6k, simply the reason i dont see the need for them unless maybe u have accounts the size of Fenway Park.

good point dmk, if you only have a few customers i would wait to be in debt until you have some more. it also depends on how much you are going to change to cut that 5 acre account? don't tell but if you figure out about 25 cuttings on both accounts and could pay it off in a year or 2 and still be able to feed yourself, you have to make a choice.
when i started out 4 years ago i bought a walk behind and now i have 2 walk behinds and a lazer z, you have to build up the business to be able to get some equipment like that, and what if you change your mind in a year, don't put all your eggs in 1 basket. good luck

I would recommend a 52in hydro wb with sulky attachment. I think that you will find that although this unit will not give you the speed you are looking for that you can still cut larger properties, and have the flexibility to cut the average residential as well 7-12m/sf.

Then you will be able to expand your client base and see if you still have the need for one later. This way you will not limit yourself to cutting only the larger size properties.

You should be able to by this machine for around 7000. this mower sin't the fastest z but it sure holds up well. I have one with almost 2000 hours and the only problem was replacing the electric clutch for the blades!!!
