from My understanding it is either a webed fabric to keep the trees from breaking branches or rope around the tree holding the trees branchis erect. This keeps the snow from breaking branches and drooping them.

Is there a spray to stop salt damage?

I've always seen this as an application of Wilt-Pruf or some other chemical to keep the trees from drying out.

We have done both, ie. mechanically protected shrubs/roses with burlap, and sprayed Wilt Pruf on Rhodies and such. Spraying wiltpruf was like spraying ice cold maple syrup.

We slowly fazed these services out though.
