Why am I backfiring?

My Kohler 23 is starting to backfire every time I crank it, but it will start afterwards. When I shut it off it will backfire if I don't let it idle for 5-10 mins to cool down so I have been doing this. But its getting to where it backfires every time I crank it, any ideas?

Burnt or sticking exhaust valve.....
Pumped up lifter....thick or dirty oil...
Blown head gasket...

Check your sparkplugs for condition...

Could it be from cranking it at a high rpm? My tiny tach reads about 2100 at idle and I know that's high but its as low as I can get it.

Remove and look at the condition of your sparkplugs....
Its a lot easier than reading tea leaves....
Low rpms are a little high.

Spark plugs look normal, sorry I couldn't do all that while I was out mowing. I think its the high idle, when I push it down to 1800 on the motor it does fine.
