Why so many lawn care companies for sale?

I have owned a Lawn maintenance business in Minnesota for 8 years now. My wife is from Florida and her family lives there. When the weather is horrible up here I start to wonder what it would be like to live in Florida. I check out craigslist for maintenance businesses for sale every once in a while. I've noticed many businesses for sale and am wondering why there are so many for sale in Florida? Is it because of the hot weather? Is it because of all the competition?

    Thanks for your replies.

You can only make so much down there cutting lawns for only 1.00 a week.

Probably because their biz plan looks like this:

-Mowing grass is easy, I can do that.
    -I can finance a $10k mower for 0% and I'm in business
-I probably can finance a trailer too
    -I already have a truck
-@$40-$50 a yard, I can make $350-$400/day plus I can do it for alot cheaper than the other guy so I will underbid everyone and take all the business.

    Then the planning stops.
Reality sets in, and they realize how expensive it is to operate and actually see what profits (if any) look like vs the amount of work they done.
Biz and equip goes on CL for less than payoff.

Summer heat also gets 'em and just not realizing how much work is involved in this biz.

I send a son to 4 years of College and a Daughter to Medical school at the same time. Plus they both had cars and money to party on, from cutting grass here in Florida.

Bottom line is a Businessman is a businessman and A fool is a fool no matter where they are.

As for all the business fore sale. Life is tougher for some people. I bought up more than a couple mowing business.

I've noticed a lot of businesses for sale in St Louis too. Probably 2-3 times as many as last spring. Likely the high cost of business and thinner margins as of late. High fuel cost has changed the game. Some are adapting, some are bailing out.

one thought i had was if the government pushes health care and hands out free green cards, im sure most companies will now have to pay these workers a fair wage. might be easier to sell the company and keep what ever accounts that make good money, to start over solo or with a smaller crew. just a guess.
  8. I love when guys who don't live here or have no idea of the market here act like they do.

They are for sale, which is not the same as selling......when they realize they are not worth the millions they are asking, things change...

if that was directed towards me, i do have family down there in Orlando, Kissimmee, and Ft Lauderdale and do visit often. thats why i said it was just a guess. as far as my statement, i talk to some guys up and down the east coast and they where planning on down sizing because of the health care law alone. they cant afford paying $800+ a month per guy in family plans. but it was just a honest guess, not saying i know everything down there.
