Does mulching around a new tree base provide any winter protection. Other than appearance and trimming protection, does the mulch serve a purpose for the trees? Thanks for the help.

Depending on your intent, you can place about 6 - 12 inches of chips on top of the roots and surrounding area. This will keep root growth going throughout the winter.
