Risk versus return. I'm not an expert on the subject by any stretch of the imagination, but like all insurance it is only good when you actually need it. Since you are a solo operator, you aren't required to use it. If you feel that the chance of you getting injured is remote enough that you would be better off banking the WC monthly fee for a rainy day, then skip the extra insurance bill. However, I would let some of the more experienced guys on this site chime in before you make any sort of decision on the matter.

    You need work comp if:

    1) You may become injured and need to pay the bills,

    2) If the people you work for require you to have it to work,

    3) You state requires it(call state for info).
