I got a call to do a estimate for normal yard clean up and mow no big deal. Will I get there and do my estimate and it was around 175 bucks. I tell my customer the price and the reply "Well on craigslist they would charge $40.00" it was a 2 acre lot with leaves and branches everywhere. Needless to say I didn't take the job and wasted my time.:usflag:
Things like this will happen. I try to tell them up front my minimum price is XX for mowing and cleanups are XX per hour. I have had them to tell me the guy that does it now does it for a lot less,I ask then why they were calling me?A legitimate company wouldn't be doing it for anywhere near that price.

i agree, if they wanted it done sooooo cheap why call anyone you. they r full of crap and hoping to talk you down to an unreasonable number. my suggestion is to always stick to your guns and then if they give you that crap and u want to leave open any window of opportunity tell them that it was a 1 time deal and if they call you again the price jumps to a certain percent. that will get under their skin. hopefully.

Ill try that! Im new to this business and am 18 im sure learning alot from experience. People just dont understand the fact of licensed and insured and that cost money to protect the both of us.
I always give a minimum price over the phone....if I miss the call and they leave a message I will look at their yard on google earth and give a rough estimate. Gas is too expensive to waste
Definitely don't be afraid to turn down work. Many times it is in your best interest. I see a lot of younger guys that want to take as many jobs as possible, but don't forget that your time is valuable.
If they want to pay $40 for a job that size, than they will probably get what they paid for.

Where are you at in MD that requires a license to cut grass? Insurance is cheap per lawn. $1 mill. liability and $100,000 equipment coverage costs me about $1.00 for each lawn that I cut. State Farm.
i've had that happen to me before, and it was in a very wealthy, private drive. guy wanted me to rake 4inches+ of leaves for $50. sorry pal, no can do. maybe you should've bought a cheaper car than that Audi sittin in your garage

here in north east ohio I get tons of people saying crap about low ballers on craigslist. Ill go out to a job and say a already extremely low price and I have had people slam doors or a say craigslist ad said all cleanups $30 no matter the size.. The low ballers wont survive with expenses long and the truth is those customers will always be pita's. Im young like yourself at only 20yrs old and people look at us like being young means we have no expenses or dont need much money. When the truth is that trailer on truck full of equipment cost money like it does everyone else. Dont worry about dropping them. Good luck
You call $40 competitive price, maybe in China. You have to use a truck not a scooter with a cardboard box tied to the back. I wouldn't even get out of bead for $40!!:hammerhead:
