XTREME PTO CLUTCHES ... XTREME DISAPPOINTMENT

2990 Views 168 Replies 17 Participants Last post by  windflower
A few years ago, I bought a PTO from XTREME based on reputation & recommendations. They make a very nice piece of equipment and it works great ... until it doesn't.
My unit suddenly made a wild screeching noise accompanied by an impressive shower of sparks. There are six flat stainless steel spring fingers that attach the hub to the friction disk ... they all let go and the unit is now worthless. Get the parts and fix it, you might say ??? NO WAY ... they DO NOT REPAIR any of their products and they DO NOT SELL ANY PARTS !!! They only sell new, complete units. So, a $600 PTO is junk because they won't sell parts ... keep this in mind when deciding to buy a PTO.

It was somewhat unintentional ... I was just finishing up one post and my computer rebooted ... thinking I had lost that text, I initiated a second post ... after that was complete, I saw that the first one wasn't deleted, but was somehow in limbo. I got to pecking around with it, and it got posted. SORRY if that offends you, but it not intentional.

Why would I be offended?

Xtreme makes a great product.
A PTO clutch does not last forever.
You’re probably one of those guys who engages at full throttle and flips it on and off 30 times throughout the day too.
I’ve ran equipment for over 30 years. I’ve had maybe one or two PTO clutches fail.
Before I had my L&L company I was a heavy equipment and automotive mechanic. Worked on small equipment too. Basically, if it had an engine on it, we would fix it. Xtreme makes a good product and it’s American made. I will continue to recommend them.
Sorry you had one unit of theirs fail on you. It doesn’t mean they have a bad product. It very well could have been how it was operated.

How long is a “few” years and how long do you expect them to last?
In general my mowers themselves don’t last more than a few years.

2-3 seasons on a clutch max. Maybe 60 engagements x 4 days per week.

Average life span for an electric clutch on my Turf Tracer has been around 800 hours.

2 Turf tigers have over 2000 hours but depends on what kind of loads.

How many hours did you get out of your xtreme pto clutch?

Ive been pounding them for decades and while they do ocassionally need replacement due to being wear parts that dont last forever, i havent seen many go bad on my mowers. Im a 30 times a day guy, thats me.....my properties with medians, curbs, islands require it. They hold up just fine for what I do. I dont throttle down or engage at idle. I engage at 3/4 or full throttle and i dont idle down to disengage.

What i see most often is the wires fall apart or become brittle and weak.

I just recently put an xtreme in an older z trak hope it holds.

If you READ my comment, I was not upset so much about the failure but rather with the lack of customer support ... they refuse to sell a repair part or to offer any kind of repair service.
And, you're probably one of those guys who are clairvoyant and knows exactly what I do and how I do it. For what it's worth, the clutch is just over two years old and it has maybe 200 hours on it.

I really don’t care what your reason for your rant is. Xtreme makes a good clutch. Sorry yours broke. Might have even been an installation error.

200 hours and 2 years and you always throttle down to engage? Only flip it on once or twice a day/ per yard? You don’t have to answer, it doesn’t matter.

Lots of companies won’t sell components to fix their products. Do you own an iPhone?
Fuzzy - when you get your new one installed, try throttling down as low as you can without stalling or lugging your motor, when you engage and disengage the PTO.

My new manual says “do not attempt to engage the deck drive at high speed as this shortens the electric clutch life - use only moderate engine speed” My dealer said to engage anywhere below half. And the rep said as slow as possible.

Good luck with the new one. Let us know which brand you end up with.

I gotta say in my time here on LS the other complaints against Extreme were about the rivets ripping out of them.
Yeah that clutch definitely prematurely failed if you've only run it 200 hours. Doesn't matter if you idle down or not, they don't go out that quickly.

Xtreme does make a good clutch IMO, but that doesn't mean they don't have some bad ones that get through. I've had brand new parts from fantastic companies that showed up and didn't work right. Several posts on this forum where xtreme clutches have failed as Scott just mentioned.

I don't idle anything down maybe right before I load in the trailer, otherwise I have some properties where i'd have to idle down, disengage, idle up a bit, engage, go full throttle a dozen times and that's not worth the ridiculousness of it. I go thousands of hours on clutches and I rarely think about it. Before i re-powered my old Deere it had 1300 hours on it, original clutch, lots of engage and disengage and full throttle. Some mowers recommend full throttle in their literature. I've not seen any that recommend idle engagement, that's not to say some people don't still do it, it's just never recommended in any manufacturer literature.

I gotta say in my time here on LS the other complaints against Extreme were about the rivets ripping out of them.
And THAT is exactly what happened to mine ... the leaf springs cut the rivets and the friction disc became detached.
I WILL find some 0.030" spring steel and cut my own replacements ... it is not a difficult thing to do ... I just can't see why they would not offer any repair parts or service. That makes it look like they aren't really doing their own manufacturing ... just outsourcing and selling.

PLEASE explain just how an improper installation would last for two years .. then suddenly grenade ... WHAT could possibly be installed incorrectly ... bolt it on .. plug it in .. are you serious ??
And YES .. I do own an iphone ... what ever does that have to do with this discussion ???

Don't bet on that Made in USA comment ... according to their website ...
"Xtreme Outdoor Power Equipment is located in Blaine, Minnesota and is an American owned and operated company. The Xtreme clutch line was designed, developed, and tested by Xtreme’s in-house engineering staff. " No where does it say they are MADE in the US. Their comment can easily confuse the minds of those who have low reading comprehension.
