Just called our local Gravely dealer and ask for a price on the 44Z. He said he wont sell them and went on to tell me how guilty he would feel if he did sell the 44Z. He said we would be coming back and grumbling to him about how much of a POS it was. He also said that they wont be around long because of all the problems the one's that are out there are having.
I was shocked to hear this from the dealers mouth. He did say if I really wanted one he could order it for me but it would be wise to keep away from the 44Z. He gave me a price of 4499.99. What do you guys think about this? I have always loved gravely mowers over scag, exmark, bob cat, and a few others.

my dealer said it is a good machine, the only problems seem to be with the eye q system. that Eye q will shut the mower down for all sorts of reasons.

Maybe this is what he was refering to?

I just left my dealer with a price for 4900. NOT counting the Eye Q which is optional on this piece of equipment.

He just said it would fall apart with commercial use. And then went on to say that he has a 52" BlahBlah Z mower brand new for only 4,999. And that it was much better quality. I just figured maybe he couldnt get the 44Z so he was playing it down.

Is this the PM 144 Z you are talking about. I would assume not or else the dealer is full of sh!t.

    OK thats different.

yes the pm44 is not built on a heavy duty frame. smaller tires, lighter guage stell etc etc. for 400 more you can get the 144Z
more to it than what I just mentioned, but cant remeber what all he told me was different.

it is still a 44 in deck, not a 52.

Sorry, but the 44Z is buil;t just as heavy as the 144. The real difference is that it has a narrow frame from the 34Z, while the 144 has a wider frame from the "100" series machines. Yes, the tires are different, but the 44 is a very heavy duty commercial machine. The 44 has a slightly smaller engine than the 144. The 144, being wider, will handle hills better than the 44Z.
I tried a 44Z demo for a day, and just tried a 144 today. Used each of them on the same 12 yards. The 44 is much more nimble and easier to get in tight spots than the 144. It also is easier to trim with as it has more deck offset than the 144 due to it's narrow frame. There have been no problems with the 44Z that I know of, and I am a Gravely dealer, as well as operating a good size lawn maint. operation. We like the cut and speed of the 44Z so much, that we are going to use one to replace our Walker on small size residential properties.:)

so is the pm44 better than the 144 in your opinion?

the price is 400 less right?

No question in my mind that for tight space mowing the 44Z is way better than the 144. Now, the exception would be if you are mowing hillsides. The 44Z has poor traction when on a hillside due to its narrow track.
As to price, I am not at my shop, so I do not remember the price difference. I was thinking it was a wider spread than $400.00.
If you can demo both, do so. You will really see how much more nimble the 44Z is.

    the 44z was 2600 at my dealer, and 5000 for the 144z with 17hp, or 5900 or 19hp 144z.

im demoing the 144z now with the 17hp, im taking it back tommarow afternoon. i LOVE it, its AWSOME! but, im going to wait a month or so i think. im not sure. i need a new truck, i dont really need a Z so i might just wait until next year.
