Great to see another young business owner out there kickin butt. Me and my younger brother my 1st employee started when I was 14 in Illinois and had a decent gig through high school. It was great because I made 50k between junior and senior year. Pretty much blew senior year because I was like wtf am I doing here I make more than you in 1/2 the time. But I lived in a rural town so when I was about 21 I packed up shop and moved up here to a bigger market. Biggest roll the dice moment in my life and It was great.

Started out up here made 50k first year solo. Next year hired some help and we started to grow. 6 years later Grossed almost 2.5 million in 2016 and have 15 employees. I'm mainly doing property care and small landscape. This season though I am gonna do much bigger landscaping jobs because now I own 2 dump trucks 2 excavators and 3 skid steers. If it does well I will probably get into full blown construction and turn that into a separate building maybe.

Having and keeping the right crew is also crucial. Our number one and for the most part only issue is keeping, retaining, and finding qualified guys who are skilled, driven, and professional. We offer way above pay, health insurance, and have lots of benefits within the company culture but it still is like pulling teeth at times.

Congrats on graduating and another record year Barrett! From everything I have read it seems that if you make the right moves and are in the right area you could potentially have record years one after the other for a long time. How long have you been in business now?

    Hey man,

Ive been mowing for about 4 years now (not wanting to grow that portion much because I don't trust employees enough) but lately I've been thinking and Im wanting to get into the landscaping portion of this business but I always seem to have problems when bidding out a job. I always seem to bid myself too low for the amount of work needed. I under estimate what needs to be done. Any advice? Also, when you have people working for you, how do you bid the job? Like do you say its gonna take X amount of hours with one guy and do it by that or just by overall labor? Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Thank you! Here are some photos of a job me and my partner did down in Louisville a few weeks ago. Had the pleasure of meeting Tom with Perfect Earth Landscaping as well. 16831053_1226375977445981_7622329450756922774_n (1).jpg 16831961_1226376017445977_6669860329085016260_n.jpg
