Hello, I had a lukewarm experience with my DR field and brush mower and am in the process of returning it. I'm new and overwhelmed with all the choices I have in mowers. Could somebody please give me a little direction on what a good ZTR in the 4k range might be. I would really appreciate it. Thanks.

i dont think that you will find a Quality commercial ztr in the 4k range. i know mowers like the exmark phaser are a little under 5k but i believe those are 34" cuts.

You can find a good used mower for that price. Wont be brand new, but hey, thats half price! I started with a 60 inch Exmark Lazer Z with (gasp!) over 3000 hours I picked up for around 2 grand. Had some headaches, but was actually a pretty solid machine. Still have it...going on 4500 hours! Expect to replace a spindle or two, do a complete tune up, and maybe even a little more. But for 4 grand you should be able to find something similar in the 1000-1500 hour range I would imagine. It helps if you are handy with a wrench too. Dont jump on the first thing you find. Take your time and find a good one. Others will say new is the only way to go, but heck...

What are wanting the ZTR for? How many properties and what size?

I really like my Deere z425, and it's right at $4k, but a bigger used machine may suit you a lot better.

Check with all the dealers for a good trade in, also craigslist and the newspaper classified. Lesco has some less expensive mowers. Don't forget to haggle!

I personally prefer Exmark, they don't sell 2 to 1 for nothing.

If the drought continues, you might see even more good equipment as people get out of the biz.

Not sure what size mower you are looking for but new a gravely 44z should be in the 5k range...used you could get a 60'' / 28hp exmark for around 4k expect 1000 hours though.
