GOD! I'm so sick and tired of running ads trying to get help and hearing the same old stories. My Wife was at my sons soccer game a few weeks ago. Long story short, the assistant coach, younger guy, needed a job. He works p/t at a music store, has no car, has a wife and a child, desperatley needs to get a decent job. He called me the other day asking if we needed help, even part time. I said yes, we chat for a few minutes told him to meet us Sat. (today) and guess what....hes a no show, imagine that. We are also hiring for sidewalk snow shoveling at a whoppin' 25-30 bucks an hour if not more,(215.00 in 5-6 hours of work!!!!!! Ive had at least 30-40 calls and a whole 4 people put in aps. Im so tired of whinning spoiled little brats b!tching about boo hoo I have no moey I need a job, when what they really mean is I'm lazy and dont want to work but I want paid. Tied of F'ing losers!

Craftsmanship and workmanship are just about a thing of the past. Our children are taught to expect something for nothing and hard work is for other folks. There are some exceptions, but not many.

Good luck finding a good one.
Gotta agree, its really sad how some people are so lazy but want to be paid top Dollar.:hammerhead:

Man, I have been working on getting the checks coming in without
me ever leaving the house, preferably without even getting out of bed
nor lifting a finger, and I have worked hard on getting that to happen.

So far no luck.

I'll keep you guys posted thou I heard the sage advise I
should hang on to my day job another week or so. :p

But if you think that's funny I tell you what kills me, too...
Folks come up to me, I kid you not...
First they talk themselves up as the greatest thing since sliced bread,
then they inform me that anytime I am ready for them to take
over my company to go ahead and let them run it since they
would do a much better job than I could ever dream of doing.
Maybe not quite, and not in those exact words, but pretty much.

At that point I am really not sure how to respond, thou a piece of me
wants to just grab one by the throat and beat some sense into 'm :p

I usually either reply with a canned answer, or humor.
It usually does get the message across, thou some take 2-3 tries.

Sigh...
Peace out lol

They are too good for this type of work. I mean sweating, getting their hands dirty, what if someone sees them.

A friend of my brother in law was going to help me plow last year, but could only work late night because he is a mortgage lender and didn't want anyone seeing him doing this kind of work. Even though he was broke and the mortgage business is slow. Yeh, see ya buddy, don't need you.

A long story short, that is the new breed of American (can't sweat or get dirty) worker in this country. This is why there are so many Hispanics working in different areas of the country..... where they come from this type work at a good wage is a wonderful opportunity that they truly appreciate.

Hey JP. Your 100000% correct. I actually hired AND fired 5 or so guys this year. I thought I found the "golden child" ....yeah he turned out to be a real piece of work. Im paying sidewalk guys (for snow shoveling) 25-30 bucks n hour and no intrest in actually applying. Hopefully next year right?

I'm solo and plan on staying that way for the very reasons mentioned here. I do agree that most kids today think the world owes them something for nothing. I have 2 kids and I'm working hard to make sure they understand the meaning of hard work. They are still small(4 and 6) but I plan on having them out with me when the get older showing them what work is so the won't end up like the losers you guys are dealing with. Good luck Nobagger, I hope you can find some good help.

Friend has a few quad axle dumps. Hauls lime, gravel, mix, whatever. Calls the the local tech school for a recommendation.... hires a guy just graduated from truck driver training. Eighteen years old! Yeah.... he finished high school at seventeen!

Tells him once what needs to be done... and that's it!
Gets a call one day from the "kid" Hey.. I blew a bag on one of the axles, what do you want me to do?
Tells em... run it into the shop.... I'll be there soon as I can.

By the time he makes it to the shop.... the "kid" has it all pulled apart and ready for the new bag! Nobody else in the shop.... nobody told him to do it... just a damn good kid with a head on his shoulders... and willing to work for his money. Not many "kids" like that anymore.

I have a question for you all. I have been reading Lawnsite for the past couple of years. The impression I get is when looking for helpers, most of the disappointments are young people without significant commitments, like a mortgage; and people with 'issues' like substance abuse, or frequent dealings with the local court system.

What I haven't read is hiring people (part time) with good work ethic that have full time jobs or retired people with good work ethic.

I assumed its because the demands of the jobs require you hire people that can put in 8+ hours when needed without a lot of prescheduling.

But since hiring and maintaining quality full time people is a significant challenge, wouldn't be worth giving a second thought to those part timers with a good work ethic?

i have many agreements/disagreements on what you just said. however it is late and i should already be in bed. routing is the biggest issue for me. i try to set my routes as tight as possible, and many customers expect their lawn done on X day. so having someone as you mention makes it hard to commit to customers. while it would be great w/ the ease of mind it would bring, i personally feel that my headaches w/ the average employee are less than the ones i would have trying to coordinate w/ your potential employee. i also like to keep my lawns on a schedule so that i know what days i cut and what days i have to use for me time or to add an extra project.

The new breed of spoiled American will be in for a rude awakening as our politicians lead us back to Walton's mountain. To survive at Walton's Mountain, you need to be hard working and resourceful. Another opportunity to thin the herd.:)

goodnight john boy.

Speaking of thinning the heard, politicians is where we need to start. The problem with them is they need to be wiped out and everything started over from scratch in government. Politcians are like cancer, if you leave one cell it will return in the same form.

These folks have moved on to more lucrative and challenging employment. They know they cannot make a living to support family, mortgage, keep financial commitments, etc. doing this kind of work. They are the smart ones who have removed themselves from the business, learning they can use their work ethic and skills to do much better in life than mowing lawns, pushing a wheelbarrow, or pulling weeds.

How can you guys expect the cream of the crop?? Its the nature of the business. Landscapers atract the lower end of the totem pole. People with little desire to better themselves or their career. The exceptions to that are the owners or college kids looking for some beer money.

Im not expecting the cream of the crop at all. It would be nice to see some one show up when they say they will for a change though. If I had a wife and kid and needed money I dont think I would blow off my first day!

my single employee got hit by a woman who ran a red light. hes out for at least a month with a back injury. luckily a past employee came back immediately to fill in. thank god, leaves are on the way! no fun doing 100 lawns a week and 125 fall cleanups solo

Well thats my point. You and i care. They dont. Thats why they cant afford to support their family. I hired a kid a couple weeks agao. He is 26 and married with 2 kids. Lives with his mother. He begged and begged for a job because he was starving. I have been kicking around the idea of hiring someone fulltime for a while anyway so i gave him a chance. He ws great the first day. A trimming and blowing machine. Faster and better than anyone i have seen including me. He didnt show up the next day and wont return phone calls. Thats why he is starving. This job attracts those types.

I thought I saw three people in your truck yesterday?...If so, where did you find the help in short notice?
